Professional planning glass conservation

Our primary focus is on the professional planning of glass conservation. We are a highly qualified team with many years of experience – our consultancy exists now for over 20 years, since 1999.

Our reports are absolutely independent, as we do not carry out conservation work ourselves, but rather supervise companies on your behalf – if you wish. Since we clearly separate execution and supervision, we are at your side as trustfully as possible – whether only for the expertise or up to the completion of the entire conservation work.

We can offer you:

  • Inventory inspection: We will visit you. We provide you with the technical equipment and other professionals, if necessary.
  • Inspection of condition, damage analysis, art-historical and conservational assessment: We examine the conservation value/monument value of your property, the condition of the object (see below for more information) and draw up an independent report.
  • If necessary, we will clarify possible asbestos contamination, e.g. in window putty: Within the scope of an expert planning it is legally required to examine the found old materials from the time of approx. 1950-1980 for the presence of asbestos. We are expertly trained to take samples in accordance with the provisions of TRGS 519 and have the samples analysed in a test laboratory accredited according to NEN-EN-ISO/IEC 17025. If the presence of asbestos can already be ruled out during the planning stage, no special precautions with regard to asbestos need be taken during the subsequent processing of the window fillings.
  •  Preparation of restoration and conservation concepts: What can, what should be done? What is better left untouched?
  •  Definition of restoration targets
  • Estimate of the expected renovation/restoration costs
  • Drawing up of tender specifications
  • Formal tendering processes (according to VOB, VOL, VOF): implementation, evaluation, contract award recommendation. We present you with a curated selection of possible conservation companies, you decide.
  • Optionally, professional consulting / object supervision / quality management during construction – if you wish our support in this phase.

Scope & Prices

All listed services can be ordered separately. Whether we work together for an expert opinion or accompany the work until completion is entirely up to you. We usually invoice our work on the evidence of our work.

It is also possible to agree on a lump sum including the preparation of an expert opinion. We can determine the costs if we have been able to estimate your project after a non-binding and free preliminary discussion. You are welcome to contact us for more information!

We are independent

According to the project, our services can provide technical support to the client or the architect in charge of the construction.

They can also be carried out analogously to the corresponding services (according to HOAI), as they are provided by architects and engineers.

As a matter of principle, we do not carry out conservation work ourselves, which means that our expertise is as independent as possible, as we do not gain any financial advantage from any conservation recommendation. This means that we can advise and support you independently and confidentially at any time of your project.

Excursus glass preserve: The preventive conservation

To preserve historical, artistically designed glass requires expert assessment, the most modern and diverse methods and techniques of underlay, as well as highly qualified restorers and craftsmen.

Dr. Ivo Rauch explains the principles in his article "Die Denkmalpflege", published by Deutscher Kunstverlag, 2004, as well as in his lecture "Handle with care", which he gave at the "Metropolitan Museum of Art" in New York in 2009.

Both are available for download below.

Dr. Ivo Rauch is also co-author of the following key texts on stained glass conservation of the CVMA, ICOMOS and the WTA:
