Dr. Ivo Rauch

Ivo Rauch, born in Oberwesel / Rhine. He studied theology and pedagogy at the University of Trier, followed by training as an art glazier in the Binsfeld stained glass studio in Trier.


From 1985 to 1990 he studied art history and German language and literature at the Universities of Trier, Basel and Freiburg i. Br.; master's degree with a thesis on relocated late Gothic stained glass from Trier Cathedral in England. 1995 PhD with Professor Wilhelm Schlink, Freiburg i.Br., on the donors of the stained glass and the founders of the Oppenheim Katharinenkirche.


From 1990 to 1994 he worked as research fellow at the institute of the Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi (Research Centre for Medieval Stained Glass) with Professor Rüdiger Becksmann in Freiburg i. Br.; during this time he studied the stained glass of St. Catherine's Church in Oppenheim am Rhein (as part of a German-French research programme for the conservation of architectural monuments) and advised on various conservation projects in the field of historical stained glass.



From 1995 to mid-1999 director of the conservation studio of the stained glass workshop of Dr. H. Oidtmann, Linnich.

June-September 2000 Conservator at the Museum Schnütgen in Cologne; lecturer in art history at the universities of Trier and Düsseldorf. Since 2008 until today Visiting Lecturer in "Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management" at the University of York (GB).


Since 1999 full-time independent consultant and surveyor


President of the National Committee of CVMA Germany. 

President of the International Scientific Committee for the Conservation of Stained Glass of ICOMOS/CVMA.


Publications and lectures on iconographic and technical conservational topics, especially on medieval and modern stained glass, iconography and church decoration.
